AT least eight people have been killed and one other critically injured after a gunman opened fire at a hair salon in the Seal Beach area of Los Angeles.
A suspect, believed to be the sole shooter, was taken into custody by police after the shooting "without incident", Sergeant Steve Bowles of the Seal Beach Police Department told KCAL-TV.
"Upon arrival we found six confirmed deceased people, along with three critically injured parties, which were transported to a local hospital," Sgt Bowles said.
Two of the injured died after being transported to the hospital, FOX News Channel reported, citing police.
Police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting, which occurred around 1.30pm (7.30am AEDT) at Salon Meritage, a beauty salon located along the Pacific Coast Hwy.
Officers located the suspect's vehicle shortly after the shooting and discovered what they described as multiple weapons inside, Sgt Bowles added.
The third injured victim is reported to be in a critical condition.
"It just caught everyone off guard and people started running outside to see what was happening," Zach Benson, who was working at a nearby restaurant, told KNBC-TV.
"It was a very bizarre scene."
The suspect was described as "heavyset with a beard" and may have been wearing body armour, KNBC reported.
He was detained in a white pickup truck near the crime scene, during a traffic stop.
Police ordered the man out of the truck and he did not resist arrest. His identity has not yet been released.
Seal Beach, an upscale community in Orange County, saw only one homicide last year and none during the previous three years, according to statistics provided by the Seal Beach Police Department.
